Located in the Southern area of Rome next to the Ancient city walls and the famous Appian way, San Giovanni is a popular residential district rich of food and historic traditions. Tourists often do not go there, mainly because of lack of time or not aware of the amount of great things to see and taste.
We created this food tour to give you a genuine experience of how Romans live, where they go get their food and in addition, to make you visit some of the city's most beautiful churches, spectacular ruins and colorful local markets.
Our tour will start with a delicious exploration of a local daily food market. We will meet and talk to the suppliers, which are sometimes also the producers that come to sell their goods from the countryside.
We will taste mouthwatering seasonal recipes, rare cheese and wine, fresh fruit and other delis. You will learn a lot about regional cuisine and agriculture. The tour will continue to some of the best family-run hosterie and restaurants of Rome, we will sit down and enjoy typical courses, including fresh made pasta.
Between the food stops we will visit San Giovanni Basilica, the one and only Cathedral of Rome where the Popes had their residence for more than a thousand years before moving to the Vatican. We will walk by the III century monumental city walls, explore the Church of Santa Croce where important and famous relics are.
We will cross a flee market and reach oustanding Ancient acqueducts. They are a symbol of Rome and used to bring more than 1 million liters of water per day to the capital of the Empire. Our expert guide wll show you how they worked. After a great dessert, coffee and gelato we will reach one of the Ancient City Gates crossed by two of the reads leading to Rome!
